Parents Training

The Incredible Years Training

Leitrim County Childcare Committee plan to deliver the Incredible Years Parenting programme through Parent and Toddler groups within the county.

The Incredible Years Parents training was developed in Washington, USA and is based on 25 years of research with over 3,000 families.

Parenting children ages 3 to 8 years can be a difficult time for both parents and children. For children it is a period of transition where they are moving from a world of fantasy and reality are often confused by a more concrete world where rules and ideas become permanent. It is a time they test the limits of their environment and finding out what will or will not be tolerated.

As children experience these conflicting needs and pressures, they may throw tantrums, whine or become destructive when they don’t get their own way: or they may lie or steal in order to get what they want or to get attention: or they may withdraw and avoid feared situations.

The Incredible Years Training promotes the idea that parents can reduce their children’s behaviour problems before they get out of control and can strengthen their social, emotional and academic competence.

Topics covered include:

(1) Play and (2) Praise and Rewards then progress to (3) Positive Discipline (4) Handling Behaviour The Incredible Years Training Programme will be rolled out throughout Leitrim pending demand, the training is delivered over 14 sessions each session runs for 2-2.5hours.
